In speech Fecal announces delay of imposition of gasoline tax

After writing the previous post I stumbled upon this article that does explain that in his speech at the 25th anniversary event yesterday, Fecal also responded to recent criticisms that his Tax Reform hurts the poor.

The freeze on fuel and electricity prices is needed to ensure inflation doesn't hurt poor families, Calderon said today in a speech from his Mexico City residence. The president also called on manufacturers not to raise prices this year.

Calderon is seeking to quell criticism from lawmakers who say his tax overhaul legislation, approved by Congress Sept. 14, hurts low-income families. Members of opposition parties, as well as Calderon's National Action Party, have said the 5.5 percent tax on gasoline in the new legislation unfairly burdens the poor who must drive for work.

Certainly, it's nice to see that occasionally when people shout and holler loud enough, their cries get to be so annoying that they're eventually listened to. Unfortunately, Fecal's proposals fall far short of the bare minimum that opponents to his Tax Reform have been calling for. Postponing the oil tax by a few months and placing temporary limits on prices of basic goods still fail to give the poor a helping hand in paying for commodities already exceeding their price range.
